Cultural Center of Spain, Casa del Soldado invites you to observe the exhibition “Operational Conditioning” by the artists Jhafis Quintero (Panama) and Paola Mancini (Italy). In this exhibition both artists extinguish their bodies from the use of black ink. The videos confuse front and background, light and dark, and, conditioned in those boxes, they add drama to their own materiality. In silence, these bodies disappear before our eyes, in the same way that the prison population is silenced continuously in most of the world.

The relationship between the human body and the idea of ​​imprisonment is, in a certain way, one of the driving forces of Jhafis Quintero’s research. With a career of two decades, his work is developed from various media that investigate the many prisons through which human existence can pass. One of them, inevitably, is that of the body itself – the piece of meat, bones and organs in which we are born is our biggest prison and with it we have to live together daily.
